Making Frit Blends
I sell solid color frits, but what to do with the tag ends? Hmmm. Well, frit blends seem to be getting more and more popular these days, so I decided to try my hand at making a few, but how to start? The main thing to remember is not to mix hard glass with soft glass, or soft glass with super-soft glass like Satake. Once you've decided what COE (coefficient of expansion, or basically hardness) to work with, the fun begins. Do you want a multi-colored blend, or a more muted monotone? For me it depends on what I have on hand, and how much. I've found that it also depends on how I feel at the time. I also will sometimes mix sizes for more texture and depth. Have fun and be brave, but keep track of your ingredients and proportions - I learned that the hard way. I made a blend that was received well, but I have no Idea what I put in it besides "a little of this and a bit of that..." Test your blend with a base of white, clear, and see how it reacts with silver. It just might surprise you. I've had some that looked absolutely terrible on white, but silver leaf made them look gorgeous!!
