Identity Theft and PayPal
As a recent victim of identity theft, I learned a few valuable prevention steps from the officer who was working with me at my bank. I checked my checking balance one morning on the way to work, only to find that there was a cleared check for $2,000.00! I hadn't written it!! After a painful several hours of cancelling credit cards, closing my checking account, opening a new account, transferring automatic debits and credits, and sending a copy of the forged check to the Fraud Department, I finally had a moment to catch my breath and realize that the sky was not actually falling and that I was very lucky. The Bank Officer asked about my payment habits, and gave me some safety pointers: 1. Do NOT use a debit card on PayPal. It's a whole lot easier to cancel a credit card than to close and open checking accounts. Credit cards also usually offer fraud protection. 2. The most vulnerable that your credit card is is when you hand it to a waiter, or someone who walks it out of your presence. Again, do NOT use a debit card in a restaurant, or in an instance like this, and try to use just one credit card for this type of circumstance. 3. If you shop online, only use secure networks. This isn't nearly 100%, but its better that open networks. 4. Don't fax your credit card or debit card!!! 5. Check the three main credit reporting companies regularly.
